Ducks originated in the mid 1800s, when rubber manufacturing began to gain ground. In 1933, Sun Rubber Company authorized a series of Disney characters and made bath floats. So that its benefits did not depend exclusively on Disney patents, the company hired the sculptor Peter Ganine to design the well-known generic duck, patenting the toy in 1949 for a period of 14 years. According to reports, Ganine sold more than 50 million of them.

There is a second version of the Hong Kong toy creator, Lam Leung-Tim who says he had a duck in production before Ganine’s, but there is no official evidence, such as Ganine’s patent.

The first appearance of a rubber duck on TV was in 1934, in the movie «Imitation of life», which begins with a child playing with a rubber duck in a bathtub.
